Description

The goal of GGWS is to engage participating young ladies in hands-on activities that will inspire, enlighten, as well as afford them the opportunity to gain insight on issues concerning the gender gap from the classroom, to the laboratory, to the professional realm and how women can and have overcome these obstacles. Representatives from the University of CT School of Engineering, Wesleyan University Department of Physics, Southern Connecticut State University, and EastCONN provide students with opportunities to engage in real world application of STEM concepts. From engineering and testing a wearable prosthetic limb, working with chemistry to solve crimes and make shampoo and writing code for cellphone applications, this yearly event provides exposure for our young ladies to these nontraditional fields of study. Girls are rarely encouraged to play with engineering related toys at an early age which sends the wrong message and we can all agree, keynote speaker Dr. Linda Barry, Assistant Professor UConn Health that message needs to change.
